Strange METAR or TAF / METAR or TAF interpretation

The only cloudbase forecast is FEW030 and how can you get -RADZ out of that?

Why not…?

Here’s another funny one

EGKK 250552Z 2506/2612 32004KT 9999 FEW035 TEMPO 2506/2507 9000 FZRA BECMG 2510/2513 30014KT

Not very funny if you’re in it.

I don’t see why you find it odd. If you look at the 0530 image you’ll see the rain approaching KK.

METAR EGKK 250650Z VRB02KT CAVOK 01/01 Q1013=
METAR EGKK 250620Z VRB02KT 9999 FEW035 01/00 Q1013 REFZRA=
METAR EGKK 250550Z VRB03KT 9000 -FZRA BKN035 00/M00 Q1013=
METAR EGKK 250520Z VRB02KT CAVOK M01/M01 Q1013=

The TAF suggests the FZRA is coming out of FEW035 but actually (the METAR says) it came from BKN035 (which practically speaking means solid IMC with a base of 3500ft).

Peter seems to like “unusual TAFs”. Here’s one you don’t see very often in the UK, fog clearance between 2200 and 0100:

TAF AMD EGSS 212119Z 2121/2224 21008KT 0300 FG BKN001
BECMG 2122/2201 27012KT 9999 NSW SCT020
PROB30 TEMPO 2201/2204 BKN012=

and it was spot on:

METAR EGSS 212120Z AUTO 22008KT 0300 R22/0700 FG VV/// 05/04 Q1005=
METAR EGSS 220120Z AUTO 26006KT 9999 OVC035 09/08 Q1006=

That is presumably because the TAF was issued at 2119 which was pretty well when the fog started to clear, so they were able to forecast its clearance accurately, to commence 2200 (just 41 minutes after the TAF was issued)

It was ammended at 212119… unfortunately the original issue is no longer online. It would have been issued somewhere around 20z

The preceding TAF was quite different.
211708Z 2118/2224 16012KT 6000 -RADZ BKN007 TEMPO 2118/2123 1400 RADZ
BR BKN002 BECMG 2119/2122 27012KT BECMG 2122/2201 9999 NSW SCT020 PROB30

It was an unusual TAF on an unusual day, even by UK weather standards.

I live near EGSS and in the morning of the 21st there was moderate snow settling to a depth of about 5cm and a temperature of 1C.

The interesting bit was the degree to which things warmed up. To have temperatures increase to 9C around midnight in January is pretty unusual. Such a large increase was forecast.

I have not seen this before

EGKA 050728Z 0507/0515 27004KT 4000 BR BKN005 BECMG 0507/0509 CAVOK TEMPO 0510/0515 9000 SHRA PROB30 TEMPO 0511/0515 4000 +TSRA BKN040CB
EGKA 050759Z 0509/0518 22006KT CAVOK TEMPO 0510/0516 9000 SHRA PROB30 TEMPO 0511/0516 4000 +TSRA BKN040CB

The metar is

EGKA 050750Z 00000KT 4000 BR FEW007 20/17 Q1015

It’s not an amendment, it’s the next TAF. The 0615 would normally be issued at 0500, and the 0918 at 0800. But the former was only issued at 0728, presumably because of the lack of METARs before that.
