Questions about PA28 Turbo Arrow III

When I flew on some weeks ago, I think I’ve landed it not more than 600m, probably much less but we had strong headwind.

Wait until hot days when heavy with nil or direct crosswinds 600m is likely to tight even when flying approach in Ovation at 65kts-70kts

The one I flew had 310hp conversion, I need only 200m for takeoff even when heavy then +1500fpm (even +2000fpm), landing is different matter, I need 1000m for weather operations and pavement, after 3h cruise you arrive back at 600m home-base and surprise it’s 20kts crosswind, you will get in on runway after few attempts but it’s not easy you and your tires have to earn it Ovations are gorgeous travel machine but you need 600nm leg mission and you will have to compromise on grass & short runways, the Arrow would fit the bill better in 300nm missions

It will be a tradeoff if I go for an Ovation…

That’s why I look at other candidates too, since I would be nice be able to land on shorter fields, but still have the capacity to fly longer trips out in Europe.
I already found out that there ain’t a perfect plane…

My profile will be something like, aiming for 50-70h/yearly

1-2h trips around the local field
4-6 trips from ESMS (sturup) <→ LFMD (cannes/mandeliue)
4-6 trips from ESML (landskrona) <→ ESST (torsby)

and hopefully some trips out in Europe over the weekend.

50h per month – I would be concerned about cruising speed. But 50h per year?
You will feel no difference between 120 or 180 knots. ;)
Except – with 120kts you will have a bit more fun :)

I think Turbo Arrow3 would fit your mission, plus it does well on grass and airways, the NA Ovation 2 or 3 should tick the box as well but it’s not worth talking speed and efficiency unless you are doing +100h/year? or +600nm legs?

NA Ovation3 or Turbo Arrow3 can fly above layred weather & high terrain with some climb and route planning if you have an O2 installation, the 30kts speed delta is nice to have on +600nm straight legs? usually irrelevant on 300nm legs

I fly NA M20J, it’s not as capable as Ovation3 or Arrow3 but fits the bill on 300nm legs with family, I have done 1000nm on my own but I am fully knackered (especially under VFR), the aircraft has 1800nm range but I have not tested sitting for 14h inside

The OP really wants a M20K 252 Encore ;-)

M20K is a good travelling aircraft, once you get used to the turbo handling.
It wasn’t for me but then I am not too tall.
I’m not sure what it’s like on short grass fields though. I think one of the Beech types, like the Bonanza, might be better at that.

FL250 (can go FL300 in Europe)

…errr that would be a very expensive M20K as RVSM starts at FL290 :)

Also, in the interests of airmanship it would require good reasons to be up at FL250 in a puddle jumper, and a good oxygen system and monitoring.

FL280 then and yes you need good reasons to be that high (likely not economical under 1000nm legs )
