I’m planning a trip from ETSI to Edinburgh area (Cumbernauld or Dundee will be the destination most probably).
Presently I’m looking for a airport in southern UK for a fuel stop and quick turnaround time.
What are your recommendations?
Wishlist:
- IFR
(- cheap avgas)
(- landing fee not too expensive)
- flight from Germany with GAR possible
aircraft is a Bonanza B36TC.
EGKB Biggin is the most obvious, meeting all criteria.
I think Oxford is easier to get in and out of than Biggin if you can get that far.

What’s the identifier for that airport?

EGTK. Certainly more light GA friendly imho.
Thanks, will check. So far, it looks quite reasonable to go there.
Have a look at Fife for your destination. EGPJ. Dundee is East Coast, 64 miles from Edinburgh. Cumbernauld is in the West, in the middle of nowhere.
Obviously it depends on how long, and what your visit is for. Travel from all of these airports, unless a car waiting, is tricky. PM for more info.
Dundee is your only option for IFR if weather poor from this group of 3.
I find Lydd EGMD is an easy stop, then route up the east coast to Dundee etc.
I agree; EGMD is great. ILS, the lot.
Avoid the ice cream there, or indeed (IME) any food, however
The slight issue with the east coast is that you don’t get good Eurocontrol routings up there. It is easier to fly VFR, below CAS.
I got this Eurocontrol route (and flew it) from EGPT Perth to EGMD Lydd the other day after a bit of fiddling around, but have not yet manipulated the reverse:
