Flying from the UK to Cyprus

LPCH by far… small, friendly airport. Beware of GPS failure for LCPH as well. Have the VOR tuned as GPS failure is prevalent more during arrival (higher up) than departure. The western area of Cyprus is very nice, especially outside the larger settlements. If you want more touristy stuff you can stay east (Agia Napa).

If you like to have some fun with jammed GPS, I advise LCLK. It would often work on the ground and die shortly after takeoff. One time it even produced a “WINDSHEAR” for us. Must be some GS miscalculation. Oh, fun times. In town, Sun Hall hotel was popular with crews. Booking by phone would get us a superior sea view for EUR 150.

I’ve done some flights to Cyprus last year. 9 landings at LCLK and 4 at LCPH. It was usually from/to Moscow via Turkey.

Can’t comment much on the ground formalities as it was handled by ops, but there’s some phrase about TURKEY ECAC MEMBER to be added to the flight plan field 18 if overflying Turkey.

In the air, Nicosia would normally hand over with an incorrect frequency when flying towards Turkish airspace. The Turks were OK in that regard AFAIR. I had a note on the yoke with correct frequencies for waypoints TOMBI and VESAR. These can be checked in Jepp FD by holding the waypoint and selecting “notes”.

Planning a trip from Berlin to Cyprus in October. Any recent experiences from LCPH or LCLK? From my research fees at both locations seem to be identical as the same company runs the airports. Both seem to have airline traffic while LCPH might be a little less busy.

Has anybody flown over Turkey lately? I understand we can not fly from Turkey to Cyprus directly but we would come from Serbia, overfly Turkey and land at Cyprus with their strange radio handover procedure. Autorouter seems to produce a nice direct routing. But does Turkey require any over flight permits etc. or is it just file an IFR plan and go?

I have a load of TB20 writeups here and while most are IFR, the routes and general procedures would be very similar under VFR. There is a lot of detail there; these writeups are intended not as social media but to show how to plan and execute nontrivial trips.

The “easy” way to do this trip out of the UK in a TB20 would be

  • UK (sit at home until the wx over the Alps is fine, and fly east of the main Alps)
  • Slovenia or Croatia
  • Sitia LGST
  • Cyprus

Currently there may be an issue at LGST in that they pretend they can’t accept foreign traffic because they need a “medical team” to check your vacc certificate so contact them for the latest.

You will find that having oxygen helps a lot around Europe, even just for VFR.

Sorry first using this forum, flying VFR no turbo and no oxygen. IMC but out of date intend revel in Feb 2022, I was hoping that someone might have done this trip, offer some advice.and tips

Hi there. With a TB20 and the range it has, it may be a good idea to plan Belgrade as a fuel stop, it has still quite cheap fuel and can provide a quick turn around. Also from there Cyprus should be reachable non stop, avoiding the hassle of Greece and its Fraport Airports. A rough estimate avoiding Turkish Airspace via Saloniki and Rhodes would yield about 900 NM, which is perfectly feasilbe for a TB20.

Sounds like a great trip!

I was tempted to go just before the pandemic but went to Malta instead.

How long are you planning to spend getting down there? Do you want a few places to stop on the way? Do you have oxygen / turbo ? How long do you like to plan for each leg ?

It will be interesting to see this thread develop.
