Yes that must be it, because if you’re engaged in a giant conspiracy you leave really obvious clues to it in the naming.

Although the Germans in WW2 did make the mistake of calling one of their radio navigation systems ‘Wotan’, which the British realised referred to Woden – a one-eyed God in Norse mythology, and thus correctly deduced was probably a single-beam system.

I don’t know. I just find it another spooky fact. Like mathematics is the foundation of our entire existence. Spooky…..

Actually, “Wotan” is one of the German forms of the name of the god called “Woden” in old English, “Oden” in Swedish, “Odin” in Norwegian/Danish etc.

Yes I know. We’ve written the same thing, what are you correcting?

Sorry, I got the impression that you though that the word “Wotan” itself was a code word. (Otherwise it wouldn’t have been much to realise.) My bad.

LOL, well, we got them here too. Both in Switzerland and Bulgaria…

Or the opposite. That generates clicks too. Lots of them.

We are punishing a country for doing the gene sequencing and they are not happy having travel closed down and a detrimental effect on their economy.

You are right in that sense. South Africa was upfront and got slammed for it, so did the UK. So why do we think China tried to keep it under wraps.

On the other hand, it is difficult to make the call NOT to stop travel until you know what is going on. But then again, once it becomes clear that it has spread already, this becomes useless and might as well be stopped.

Where do they even find these people?

Right outside your front door, in your main streets. They are in the majority.

I’ve been saying that since the beginning: In such cases the huge majority of people WILL prefer measures which makes them feel safe. And: If the government calls for a lockdown, they have a stronger stance against anyone who wishes or forces them to continue without doing anything. If governments declare a state of emergency, it opens the way for financial aid e.t.c. Lockdowns does not always mean oppression to everyone.

There is a not unrealistic scenario that at some point in time delta (and other variants that are out there at that time) gets replaced by a variant that is
a) similar enough that an infection with it generates high degree of immunity against delta
b) much more contagious and
c) has a much milder form of infection so that it is basically no longer life threatening

Yes, that would be a jackpot.

‘Wotan’ (that spelling) was the code word the Germans used to describe the system – the British came across the term being used in Enigma traffic. Knowing that the Germans tended to use code words that gave clues, R V Jones asked a linguist at Bletchley Park about it and learned of it being a version of Odin / Woden. Jones, being well-educated, would have heard of Odin (and possibly Woden, which even in English-speaking countries is less commonly used than Odin) but the German version would have been unfamiliar and required specialist knowledge.

Of course once you knew that, it was a simple case of asking oneself what property of Odin could be relevant to radio beams. He is often depicted with one eye.

Jones’s book, Most Secret War, is a fascinating read. Science, drama, warfare, politics, practical jokes.

Off topic, I know, but +1 for that. Just in the process of re-reading it for the n-th time. One of my very favourite books.

Firms involved in M&A pick random codenames for projects or companies for that reason – some people try to slip in more or less obscure inside references which may give the game away.

However, I consider it unlikely that the anglicised spelling of greek letters was designed for this particular instance…
