IIRC you need permission of the owner of the land and technically speaking there are some restrictions on the frequency of take-offs/ landings and the distance to any residences. But I don’t think it’s strictly adhered to (e.g. you have no idea where a sailplane will land and you can’t easily find out who to ask whether a tow plane can land there as well to get you out).
