LOL,well, not that one has a lot to do with the others… I am very much pro freedom but the conspiracy theorists are well invited to crawl back under their stones.

Where as Creationism is concerned, that is a development which is totally crazy. It really is what happens if a party gets under the control of the wrong people. Not the first time, but definitly not encouraging. So if America decides to impeach Trump on whatever grounds they can find, they will be stuck with Pence… better? Worse? Who the hell knows, but not encouraging.

Just let’s keep the issues apart without throwing everyone who subscibes to the conservative definition of freedom into one pot with everyone who is conservative. Doesn’t help and is moreover not accurate. Lots of people subscribe to the ideal of a freedom oriented society without subscribing to creationism and the likes.

I have 0 problems with anybody living his American freedom dream.

I just can’t stand it when the downsides of that ideology are excused by calling countries with a better net of healthcare where the gap between rich and poor is at least a little smaller “socialist”.

Trump in the WH is an apprentice i can’t take serious. Pence is a fundamentalist religious hardliner. At least he doesn’t lie as much as his boss …

Both will do, and already have done, a lot of harm to this wonderful country.

How many times have you posted this same rant already Alexis?

So it might seem, but it is very far from any form of European social democracy IMO. In my head (put on the extreme here) the republic party is a gang of Christian fundamentalists slash fascists slash nationalistic protectionists. The democratic party is simply the reaction force against the plain stupidity of it, but with no ideology or agenda on it’s own. It also seems to me that for most Americans, politics is an irrelevant part of their lives, which is rather understandable

@AnthonyQ, my experience in the US is that people are extrordinarliy helpful to each other.

Indeed @Silvaire …I have found Americans to be extremely friendly and helpful…my dig was intended for government level…but perhaps even that was unwarranted… (sorry if this comment is now out of sequence but I thought it had to be made)…

It has nothing to do with social politics per se. That is one misunderstanding which is quite profound. The word socialism in the US has nothing to do with social politics either it is a synonym for communism. And that the term “liberal” is a synonym for democrats and other people with left wing thought was something I had to learn, as in Switzerland liberal means something very different and the “liberal party” is part of the center-right.

I would not put it that generally. There are fractions of the GOP which today exhibit this kind of stuff and unfortunately some of them made it to this administration. But there are a lot of conservatives which are almost equally unhappy with the current situation as the democrats are.

In a way you could say so. The democrats have an agenda, but were not too successful to bring it across during 8 years they held the WH. They (and during the campaign their candidate) alianated enough middle class Americans to open the door for Trump.

I’d think the last president where a majority of Americans across the aisle stood behind fully was Reagan, possibly Bush 41. Clinton already split America in a way outsiders had trouble understanding. Out of this unhappiness came Bush 43 and he continued to split the nation due to the Iraq war. Obama was born out of a protest movement against the Bush WH and Trump is the result of a protest movement yet again. What is worrysome is that the current climate is sufficiently poisoned that following the 2016 election neither candidate would have been acceptable to the other party. That is actually unacceptable. The last time this happened was before the Civil War. And we know how that came about.

The World Happiness report is a funny thing It’s a measure of the general happiness the average population in a country “feels” with respect to some quantifiable variables. On the Wikipedia page you can also sort by those variables. The US doesn’t score particularly well in “freedom to make life choices”. Again, showing the “American dream” (of freedom), is nothing but a dream in the modern world, in relative terms.

Still the US is a relatively “happy” place to live in, only surpassed by the Nordic countries, Switzerland, Australia, NZ, Canada, Netherlands, Austria, Israel and Costa Rica. The US is “happier” than both Germany and the UK for instance according to that report.

Anyone who thinks Switzerland is a place full of happy people hasn’t lived there.

We have a saying, loosely translated to “everyone forges their own happiness” or something like that. Trust me, it takes some effort with this metar in the end of June:
