Mavis today (Bloomer R.I.P.)

Dragging this back to the first page – sorry.

Had a great day in Mavis today. I am exhausted. Old Hay to Rochester to pick up fuel. I have only ever been into Rochester once and that was April 2007. Lovely airfield and by the very nature that one of our fuel accounts is there, I will be going in more often. Sorry Rochester. Then departed to Goodwood. I am starting to warm to Goodwood. The ATC folk are very pleasant and welcoming. Tuned into Shoreham and they seemed to be a lot busier than other airfields so the new landing fees cant be detracting too much from trade. We then went back to Old Hay to do a few more circuits. The solo circuit was fab. The Old Girl transformed into a spring chicken with the right hand seat empty. Wonderful. I think I am starting to fall in love with Mavis.

Overall, everything was much more controlled. All landings were, I think, on balance ok. Nothing to blush about!! Some of the unscheduled bumps in the runway at Rochester and Goodwood tried their best to get our feathers ruffled on TAKE OFF but order was maintained, JUST!! Hahahahahaha.

I flew in clean socks as apposed to socks and shoes which gave me a little more room and more importantly for me I could feel the rudders and brakes in a more tangible way. Jury is still out on the Nexus 7. Need something small. I also need to sort the kneeboard but I think I have found a way around that without having to buy a new one. SO onwards and upwards. Charlton Park is now in the cross hairs. Mavis has an electric start so I don’t need to beg favour from anyone to prop swing.

I guess I will be plane washing too on my next day off. Poor Mavis looks like she has a mud pack all over her. Reminds me of the time I flew Shrek from Andrewsfield and got mud all over her. Owner was not best pleased with me. Hehehehehehe.t

Thanks for all the titbits of info re the Luscombe. Found it most useful.

I have a friend who flies his Luscombe with no shoes so it’s the done thing I use thin soled shoes for the same reason.

On takeoff do lift the tail, but gently. That limits the speed and precision with which you have to stab the right rudder in and out to keep the thing going straight. That’s about all I can think of for takeoff other than the usual tail dragger stuff.

Sounds like fun

You’ve got warmer cockpits at this time of year than our Jodel – thick socks, often boots, so I’ll still be able to feel my feet.

What a gorgeous aircraft…if only I lived in Kent!

This is very tempting, considering I live in South East London and fly at the Tiger Club!

Looks like a nice plane. Luscombes are appealing in the way they’re a bit sexy, combined with being very inexpensive…

I recently had a kid contact me who is interning at a friend’s business and away from home. He’s obviously nuts about Luscombes and has his own 8E like this one at home in Idaho. His is polished all over, with blue stripes since it started life an 8A, and no electrical system to keep it light. Luscombes remain analogous to US hot rod cars (think ‘32 Ford roadster) in the eyes of a few kids (young and old), and it’s nice to see. They’re also cheaper to buy in 2015 than those cars!

I’m sure whoever buys the share will have fun. I’d check the useful load on this one, given the panel installed, but 8Es have a gross weight which makes it work out better.

Hmmm … so what don’t I get ? Is the “share” is a 1/10th or 1/20th or ???

Based on above, does that mean the total insurance is well in excess of £5,000 annual ???

No, an insurance excess is how much is not covered by insurance (known as a deductible in the US). Basically, if you crash it, the first £1000 worth of damage you have to pay for and the remaining damage is paid for by insurance.
