If something is the slightest bit ambiguous my little brain usually gets the 'wrong end of the stick'.
In case it's not a pan-European expression:-
'wrong end of the stick' - to not understand the situation correctly.
"Her friend saw us arrive at the party together and got the wrong end of the stick"
