I met Michel Gordillo at Aero a couple years back and he has done similar in his RV8.

John was using one of the Delorme (now Garmin) InReach messengers.
They use the Iridium satellite system.

I think the Flightaware uses ADSB and coastal radar which works up to about 100 miles from the coast.
The diversion at the end actually got him back to his home base where the journey started at Concorde airport.
