John was using one of the Delorme (now Garmin) InReach messengers.
They use the Iridium satellite system.

I think the Flightaware uses ADSB and coastal radar which works up to about 100 miles from the coast.
The diversion at the end actually got him back to his home base where the journey started at Concorde airport.

I can’t remember the name of the book written by a UK pilot who did a similar trip, also in an RV; it was very interesting and somewhat poetic to read him describe the mental state of a single pilot doing that kind of flight in a single engine piston plane.
