Yes; I thought it was the aviation equivalent of the world’s ugliest car

If it looks good it flies good – and if it looks ugly…..

If you are going in and out of shitty strips with a tonne of rice, this is the airplane for you. It is a legendary airplane, surprised you have not seen it before.

The PC-6 even holds the world record for the highest ever landing of a fixed wing aircraft, at 18865 feet on a Nepalese glacier (says Wikipedia)

The CIA found that to be so, better than the Helio Courier.

The PC-6 is a world famous airplane with very good STOL perfomance.

My late friend Tom Danaher, who was one of Hollywood’s most famous stunt pilots flew it for the movie “Air America” and the story behind that is breathtaking: Since the Thai military would not give the film crew one of their PC-6s when they saw what they wanted to do, Tom found a wreck of a PC-6 in a Thai JUNKYARD and made it flyable within 2 weeks … no instruments, windows cut from sheet plexi by the film crew and the PT-6 engine … they found found hanging in a bar of an Air Force Casino in Thailand as decoration.

I told that complete story in one of my books, and many others Tom told me. Here’s the clip from the film, Mel Gibson flying ;-)

@Silvaire: “Air America” was the movie about those CIA operations.
