EPGD to EVRS via Kaliningrad FIR

I’ve almost finished writing up my Baltic expedition on my blog – the section from Kaunas/Lithuania to Bydgoszcz/Poland is here .

There’s also a writeup of my visit to Spilve in the previous episode.

Flying through the “gap” of 40 miles really wasn’t much of a problem. Beware of danger areas on the Polish border go up to 4300 feet so you ideally want some decent VFR conditions for that. There were also other active danger areas that made us fly a little earlier than originally planned (to get through them before they became active).

I did try to plan an IFR route via Autorouter and it defaulted to one through Kaliningrad . I doubt ATC would route you that way given the statement above. I’d guess an off-airways IFR flight through the gap would be permitted, but didn’t need to try.

Definitely an area worth a visit and quite a contrast between the three Baltic countries.
