TB20 flight - Athens to Munich (Straubing) and back

Nice report and experience PETAKAS ! N'asai kala kai na xanapas... Be well and keep going...

LGGG, Greece

I’m going to do this same flight (Athens to Straubing) the coming weekend with the TB20, weather permitting.

Intention is to land at Straubing EDMS Sunday 2/8 ~1100L and we have a booked airline flight leaving Munich at 1900L Sunday.

The Sunday airline flight cannot change. The weather near the Alps surely CAN and it looks like it may make me do the flight to Straubing on Saturday 1/8 in a single day from Athens.

So any of the usual lurkers herein :-) may be seeing me (and copilot friend) if you fancy a beer in Munich (city) on Saturday where we may have to stay overnight if weather in worse on Sunday or Sunday ~1200L at EDMS if Sunday weather is better and we do the Kerkyra LGKR – EDMS flight on Sunday early morning.

I am tempted to pop down Sunday (and fly back on Monday).

I urge you to pop down a day they will be working on it ! that will be their worse nightmare in supervision.
After all it was your write up on the very job about to take place there I referred to them when booking the job and only because of you they specified separate entry for “Antennenkabel RG400” in the offer :-)

Kidding aside keep in mind the shop is open only weekdays so you won’t see much (kidding again) apart from two Greek misfits in lower Bavaria plains flying home in few hours. Have to run back home before cash runs out LOL!

How long are you there? Are you there already?

Now in Mykonos, Thursday in Athens, Saturday or Sunday (depending on weather in Straubing) and Sunday night back to Athens by airline from Munich.
If Sunday weather is OK we will arrive Straubing late Sunday am and have few hours spare till we go to Munich airport to catch the airline evening flight.
If Sunday weather is bad we will arrive Straubing Saturday pm and spend the night and Sunday day in Munich until the evening flight back to Athens

Oh, too bad … Saturday/Sunday …, I’m in Tokyo :-)
Next time!

Well … 12 years later after the above set of flights, I had to fly again the TB20 from Athens Greece, North to Avionik Straubing for one more avionics upgrade in its lifetime.
The 962nm trip was done in a Saturday-Sunday set of flights with a stop overnight in Dubrovnik.
Below is an article in Greek regarding the trip.
Providing an English version is not that easy for me at this stage.
Herein I post the flight’s article in Greek with pictures and in the end I provide some data.

Thanks a lot and no worries, internet browsers do a decent job translating such texts.

So what was the work being done? A new AP? What exactly was wrong with the old one?

The KFC150 Autopilot would not pass the self test.

It was troubleshooted in Greece but they were unable to find the fault and I did not want to mess with possible problems down the line.
So the decision for upgrades was taken in view of the future value of the aircraft in the years to come.

That was the tipping point for a dormant dream that was boiling for years …
Total upgrade to the whole Garmin suite.

Avionics upgrades:
1 × GARMIN GFC500 Digital Autopilot
1 × GARMIN GTNX750Xi Navigator, Terrain etc. & COM1 VHF
1 × GARMIN GNC215 COM 2 VHF (remote unit connected to GTN750)
2 × GARMIN GI275 as Digital ADI & HSI units for GFC500 autopilot
1 × GARMIN GTX345 ADS-B In-Out Transponder
1 × GARMIN GMA35C (remote panel for GTN750 + Bluetooth connectivity)
1 × GARMIN GSB15 (USB charger ports)

KING KFC 150 Autopilot & ALT preselect go out.

Garmin GNS530 Navigator goes out (has 8.33 spacing)
The Garmin SL30 COM (below the GNS530 Navigator in the picture) goes out since it does not have 8.33 spacing

Original KING KI 256 analogue Attitude Indicator goes to the right panel as standby pneumatic AI (without Flight Director)

The L3 Stormscope (at right foot of pilot) stays as is.

The electric Attitude indicator (right panel) maybe it will also go out.

ADF and DME stay/move wherever they can fit.

Picture of the panel as it was delivered in AVIONIK Straubing
