I am looking for a new FAA 145 company to do this.
The one I was hangared in has gone. I used to fly to IAE but that’s a long trip and there is nothing at/near Cranfield.
Are there maybe some travelling people, who don’t charge 500 quid?

What if an altimeter is required equipment on the TCDS?

Read the relavent regulations FAR 91.411 & 91.413
Here’s the important bits :
" No persons may use an ATC transponder that is specified in 91.215(a), 121.345(c), or § 135.143(c) of this chapter unless, within the preceding 24 calendar months, the ATC transponder has been tested and inspected and found to comply with appendix F of part 43 of this chapter"
And :
“No person may operate an airplane, or helicopter, in controlled airspace under IFR unless – (1) Within the preceding 24 calendar months, each static pressure system, each altimeter instrument, and each automatic pressure altitude reporting system has been tested and inspected and found to comply with appendices E and F of part 43 of this chapter;”
So, if you fly VFR and do not use the transponder then you can legally move the aircraft.
So, the altimeter check (which is done at the same time) is optional also?

Correct for VFR ops, but required (91.411) for IFR ops.
Most shops do both at the same time for convenience.
I know one shop that charges by the instrument so you could ask then to test just certain instruments, although I would not recommend that.
Every shop I have used charges per instrument. I normally paid £60 per… so £240 total; 2 altimeters, TXP and the autopilot.
This concession is very useful to know.
