That is quite common. Most ‘golf insurance’ policies cover it in addition to the more genuine risks such as liability (hitting someone with a ball) and theft of clubs.

I have no idea how many genuine claims are made, since I’ve never made a hole-in-one and although I know people who have, they do not have such insurance (and nor do I.) It’s a bit farcical really since firstly no actual liability exists – you don’t have to buy the drinks – and secondly it would be very easy to defraud. I guess if you claim more than once for it they just whack your renewal quote up to some enormous number.
