Germany threatens to ban Telegram

Why not forbid the telephone ? Bad people use it too.

Flooding telegram with complaints’ is kindergarten

It is kindergarten championship at the moment.

Presumably a “hate group” will register on telegram as “The Virgin Mary Admiration Movement”

Peter, repent !
All this points to the collapse of Europe, and we watch the news, not the collapse.

Would not matter if Google did because you can sideload an apk. But with Apple you never know, and rooting an Iphone is a big hassle (and you generally can’t use rooted devices for banking apps, run Jeppesen software, etc).

Rooting an iPhone is “interesting” from a theory point of view, but honestly, what is the point? You basically loose all of the advantages the iPhone might have (Apple-Ecosystem, family-functions, …) and are just left with a premium price on a not so premium device.

And why the operators decide to turn a blind eye to hate groups?

Two reasons for that.

1. The pragmatic: Survivor bias!
It is not that the operators decide to do that but it is that the users decide to use platforms where the operators do not interfere with content. Signal, Viber, Tox, Line – and not forget the good ole #ICQ are all potential alternatives to Telegram where the users will turn to as soon as Telegram is shut down. Trying to shut down an internet messenger these days is like trying to behead hydra.

2. The theoretic: Hate is in the eye of the beholder.
There is no international accepted definition of what constitutes “hate” or even further “unacceptable communication” and what is acceptable. A German government trying to tell a Russian service that is domiciled in Dubai what is acceptable and what is unacceptable is just a joke. It’s like if the same German government would try to tell a US company that pictures of breast feeding women are actually no porn ;-)

Yep and that is probably also why US services get to do whatever they wish, as they are quite heftily censored already.

I wonder whether the fact that it is a Russian service has something to do with it, even though it is pretty unclear how Russia as a state is involved there. But in the end, imagining that anything is “private” over the internet is quite naive too.

Is it the Zeitgeist that people shun other messengers like whatsapp and skype while using something developed in Russia where nobody really knows where the data go?

there is a lot of talk and lip service being paid to Telegram, and Signal etc, but the reality is those things aren’t really getting much traction. Here is a good overview of DATA being trafficked on Mobile devices globally (apologies I’m a bit of a geek for social media and its monetisation, if it isn’t your thing you can stop reading now ;-))

Key Points:

- Video streaming is half of all mobile data usage. This is not equivalent to time spent, since video takes up more bandwidth than other digital media. Still, I found this share of usage surprising.

- In Video, YouTube is more than all other major players, combined.

- Just 2 companies, Alphabet Inc. & Meta hold 75% of ALL VIDEO. (the artists formally known as Google and FaceBook)

- In just 3 years TikTok has surpassed both Instagram & #Facebook for video usage.

- Perhaps most surprising in Video; Netflix is just 4%. This indicates Netflix is not at all a mobile app, and that illustrates an important issue for them. Mobile is a HUGE part of the entertainment diet in Asia, South Asia & Africa (key territories for Netflix’ potential growth). This data demonstrates they are not getting the usage in those markets they need, to sustain the growth they must.

- Social is 19% of mobile data. While, again, not equal to time spent, I expected higher.

- Meta represents 93% of all social usage. Ninety-three mother-forking percent! (That game is called Monopoly!)

- Meta also dominates Messaging (WhatsApp at 31% and Facebook at 14%) at a combined 44%, more than all other major messengers combined.

- “Web” is just 13% of all data – lower than I guessed.

- Google is 41% of all Web usage. No other app gets a big enough number to be even mentioned.

- Gaming reps just 4% of all mobile data usage. Audio just 2%. Once again, less for both than I imagined.

- When you combine Meta’s total usage across Social, Video & Messaging, they are 34% of all mobile.

- When you combine all of Alphabet, across all categories, they rep 29% of all mobile.

- TOGETHER, META & ALPHABET CONTROL 63% OF ALL MOBILE DATA USE ON THE PLANET.

Important stats not on this chart:

55% of time spent on the web is mobile.
99% of all Social Media users access their socials on Mobile and 78% of actual Social Media use is now exclusively mobile.
Nearly all TikTok usage and by far, the vast majority of Snap and Instagram usage is mobile.
40-50% of YouTube usage is mobile (that number has fallen during the pandemic and due to big increases in CTV usage).
In the US Apple controls 59% of mobile use, and Android controls 40.5% of mobile.
Globally, Alphabet/Android controls 70% of all mobile use, and Apple/iOS controls 29.3%.

There ;-)

Sorry, the data is obviously wrong.

Depending on which data source you trust, between 15% and 30% of all mobile traffic is “adult” (i.e. porn) – in your data, porn video doesn’t exist …

Germany

My guess is that porn is included in ‘video streaming’.

Correct, again there is a difference between data and traffic, web page based it is estimated between 30 – 34pct of all traffic is to porn sites. However from a data perspective it is a lot less.

Telegram is my favorite messenger (good UX, useful features).

WhatsApp, Signal, Threema etc.. suck imho. Most people still use WhatsApp.

Youtube (to large extend), TikTok, FB Video, Insta and Netflix do not show porn. So if it was included in “Video-Streaming” it could only hide in the 5% (of the 49% vid) “others”. That would be less than 2.5% of the total traffic and therefore order of magnitude too small – even neglecting the fact that at least half of that “others” is twitch.

I am sorry, but best case is, that it is a “what we do not write doesn’t exist” type of data set that acts as if there were no porn on the internet. Then the conclusions of LFHN would just be questionable,
Worse case would be that it is fake data from the beginning that was simply made up to create the impression, that…

Which is obviously not the case. Esp. as the picture is labeled “Mobile traffic worldwide” and still IQiyi, qq, Youku, etc. (all of the Top Chinese Video sites) are not even mentioned – it is seems to be compiled with a quite special definition of that “world” thing…
