Eastern trip to Romania - Bulgaria - North Macedonia - Slovenia

Being engaged to run a seminar at Romania the week before Eastern, we decided to spend our vacation before and after in the eastern part of Europe. It was a good choice to do so. Especially the food was sensational during the whole trip.

But let’s start on the beginning. Friday the weather is getting better and better an so our VFR trip could start. Over the alps and Hungaria we flew directly to Arad LRAR for refueling and continued 10 minutes to LRTR. Her we spent our first weekend. And Timisoara is worth to stay there, even longer.

On Sunday we had a low cloud base, but it was possible to go to LRSB. Sibiu was the town where I had to give two days of public speaking and communications training. So I do know the town only from the walks in the evenings. But anyway it is another place you must see.

Then we had the intention to go to Bucharest on Wednesday, but as the weather was better on Tuesday evening, we flew directly after the trading to LRBS. What we found out is, that flying in these countries on our trip means always to inform the airports in advance of our intentions, even if no PPR ist requested. That eases the official procedures very much.
Bucharest was worth the 3 nights stay, because there is so much to see. To get around via Bolt is a cheap and reliable solution at Romania.

After the big city we need to relax and go to the Black Sea. As Schengen wasn’t activated yet and Burgas was closed, we decided for LBWN. Varna is a nice city too, especially before season. So we enjoyed the Black Sea for two days.

Then we headed off to LBPD. Our niece was there for competition several times and now we could visit Plovdiv as well. Two nights, walking around, up and down the seven hills – another nice experience.

From there we could go direct, as mentioned here in the forum, to Ohrid in North Macedonia. LWOH has customs and Avgas (although not mention the AIP). But going there means to write a request in advance. After the okay regarding our planned flight times, we also hat to get a landing permit from another official. But the lake and Ohrid itself is worth the paperwork.

Last stop of our trip was LJMB. But to reach the place we had to fly the mountains of the Balkan for about 1:45 hours. Maribor was then the highlight regarding the food.

When flying back on Saturday the weather over the alps gave us a view from pole to pole. And so a perfect trip comes to a perfect end.

What a cool trip, especially working by GA. The Black Sea looks nice (I’ve never been).

What is the black fish skeleton? Is it edible, or just for decoration?

Hi Peter,

Ohrid, nice place indeed. Could you indicate a fuel price there? Or did you refuel at Skopje (which is on your map, but not in your text)?

We had to pay in cash in Euros: 172 l Avgas for 370 €. Skopje on the map was a mistake. We made it direct from Ohrid to Maribor.

It was eatable. A chip in form of a skeleton.

Lovely trip! I’ll be back in Plovdiv in 2 weeks… by airline however.

Ohrid is wonderful indeed.

Thanks, that‘s rather much. Skopje is only 1.7€/l.
