Flying to LOAN airport. Advice needed!

LOAN most definitely has a tower. It is not self announce. Friendly place. Plates are available on SkyDemon. If you still need them, I’ll figure out a way to post them.

Plenty of frequencies, incl. Tower ;-)

Ok… So why does AIP-Austria state that it does not?

When you say an airport has a “tower”, you don’t mean a building but a function — an air traffic control unit providing ATC services on and in the vicinity of an airport. A tower cab may house a tower function or an AFIS function or an A/G operator.

LOAN IAP

As far as I can see the TWR frequency is for LOXN, not LOAN. As long as you stay outside of LOXN MATZ I don’t see a reason to contact their TWR.

There’s AD frequency – I believe it’s not official TWR providing official ATC services; I think it’s more like advisory. As far as I remember when switching from Vienna Approach they told me “Contact local frequency 122.65”.

So it is A/G. That’s what the text on the plates suggests, too. There is no other ATC service than “official ATC service”. These distinctions are not unimportant! Confusion about this have led to accidents. So by all means say that LOAN has A/G or a “radio operator”, but please don’t say it has tower!

Fair enough on “tower,” but the OP should be careful to land only when the non-tower is open and he has radio contact with people staffing it on the ground, using frequencies on the plates and following preferred routes of entry.

Agree. I wrote “tower” in post #2 because I remember talking to radio operator there but then I realized it wasn’t “TWR”.

Please note, IFR plate i posted link to is not current.
