If I was coming back via SAM to W/Waltham, I would stay as high as possible for as long as possible e.g. (thick red line)
One can be FL064 OCAS past Popham etc, and the final descent into WW is just the very last bit. And I would happily tell Southampton that is what I want and why.
In the UK, avoid being at/below 2000ft at all costs, especially on a weekend
