Femund Fjellstue has opened the winter airport for the season.
1000 × 30 m of ice. Hotel, fuel, engine pre-heating. Femund is a lake in the middle of the mountains.
Cool (forgive the pun)! How does one brake on an ice rwy?? I guess the answer is ‘not at all’, does one simply let the a/c roll out (into the snow if needed)?
There is enough braking action on the ice to stop in 1000 m. Aerodynamic braking goes a long way, and there are asperities on the surface of the ice that create some friction.
I have landed on runways so slippery that I fell flat on my face when leaving the aircraft – particularly at ENHA.
This looks like a great destination! Would the ice hold a SR22 or PA46?

The ice will hold a tank. I would guess between 30 and 50 cm
It did hold the truck that removed the snow…
But the truck didn’t land….

If you think that’s a problem then I don’t want to know how you land
All you need is a nose-up attitude and a rate of descent.
The ice under the airstrip is actually 70 cm or more. According to Army regulation it can hold a vehicle of 45 tons. According to more strict civilian regulations “only” 25 tons. This means of course that all Cirruses must be landed extremely gently
