Class 2 medical in France

Hello, can I ask if there are any differences when you get your class 2 medical in France. I am looking to restart my Flying, and I’m now based in France. Also does anybody know of a list of ME’s in France. Many thanks.

Hi David,

Where are you in France ?
Usually, flying clubs have a list of local MEs.

As Jujupilote writes most aeroclubs will have a list of AMEs but you can also get one from the DGAC website.

@DavidA – I presume you have a French EASA PPL?
(I see Elstree under your user name)

Unlike in some countries where you usually have everything done by the AME, alot of french AMEs expect you to get a blood test & ECG (plus any other test you may require depending upon your personal medical circumstances) done by your local doctor/lab/specialist and provide them with the results on the day you visit them to get the paperwork done for the DGAC…

Regards, SD..

fwiw my experience. I have no idea what a UK medical is like.

My first one, last April: doctor sent me a list of things to get in a blood test. Then the actual test included ECG, respiratory test, hearing test, vision test (with glasses).

Second one, a couple of weeks ago (different doctor, different place): didn’t ask me for a blood test, but told me I should have got one (???). Did everything the first one did except the respiratory test. I got an FAA medical at the same time, but that of course is pretty much a non-event.

If you’re used to FAA medicals, the French ones come as a surprise. They actually examine you!

You should also down load and print off the form on the DGAC or FFA site. It saves time with the AME and some prefer it filled in as much as possible in advance.

Most of this is supposed to be EASA Part-MED (e.g. what age and how often you need an ECG) but there seem to be big country differences.

Thanks everyone. Does the AME give you a prescription to have the tests done and then you just pay the lab?

That was what happened to me first time around.

There is really a lot of variation between countries!

For my last medical examine, I had to go to a new AME as the old one stopped doing aviation medical.

The new one wanted a blood test. I’ve never had a blood test previously with a class 2 medical exam. On enquiry, he told me that it’s not a requirement but he likes to do it. I got my class 2 medical cert on the day even though the blood test results took a week to come back. So obviously they had little bearing on the cert issue.

Regarding eye test, all I’ve ever had, has been the standard “stand here and look at the chart on the wall and tell me that is the last line that you can read” eye test. I’ve never heard of someone being sent to an optician before being issued their medical cert.

So it does seem to vary a lot from country to country, even under the same EASA body.
