Things to think about before applying

Becoming a new cabin crew member might involve a drastic lifestyle change, which brings with some challenges as well as considerable benefits.
Cabin crew often work long unsociable hours, including on weekends, and especially during the busy summer months.

They are rostered on ‘standby’ and ‘airport standby’ duties, so may also be called to cover sickness, delays or extra flights.

If you haven’t done so already, you may want to complete our ‘Try before you fly’ quiz to see if the role is really for you.

It’s essential that you have a valid email address and internet connection so you can receive your monthly roster and associated changes electronically.

To obtain an aircrew ID, you’ll also need to supply us with a valid Criminal Record Check (CRC) and be able to remember your last five years’ activity for references to be requested.

Well, I live near to Brighton so could dress up and apply?

Not sure I would ever pass the CRC though, with all the dodgy VFR I’ve been doing!

Have a good standard of education and a verifiable five-year activity history

What sort of activity are they looking for?

Better not say that here in the Isle of Man! Much as I like EasyJet’s fares (which have been of tremendous benefit here), I think the evening Gatwick flight to Ronaldsway has only been on time 20% this year.

Why is this here?

I left it because I thought it was quite funny, despite being obviously not EuroGA applicable.

Some interesting “social fashion” aspects there e.g. no visible tatoos or body piercings. If someone has a daughter (or a son) who wants to get into that work, they might like to tell them before it is too late.

Interesting the no visible body piercings. I’m sure there could be a sexual discrimination case unless they are refusing to hire women who wear earrings as well as men who wear earrings.

My Daughter went to the British Airways cabin crew assessment last week.

It is hard work and pretty stressful for those who are keen and ambitious to make a career of this.

Eight candidates from forty made the final stage for an interview and i’m very pleased and proud that she was made an offer. Good luck to her.

Great thread glad you left it Peter as a bit of fun.

Glad your daughter got through. Hope she enjoys it. I gather it is great fun but reliably informed its not what it was for the long term. Huge drop out rate after a few years and not really a career any more but as i said huge fun for a few years when you are young.

In 2003, just BJ (before Justine) I had a date with a BA head of cabin crew on a 747 (female, I should add ). She was on c. 40k, after some 30 years in the job, which she said was “great money for a girl” but said the job is a “life stealer” because you work terrible hours which destroy your health and make it very hard to find and run a relationship (a polite way of saying your options tend to be limited to doing stuff with the pilots). You have no choice but to eat sh*it food nearly all the time, your body clock gets buggered… It may be better in some respects on Easyjet because they do short-haul but the hours are still crazy, with so many flights starting at a ridiculous early hour (one of the costs of getting a cheap flight).

First date talk? :)

My PPL flight instructor used to be head / instructor cabin crew too, on short haul. She said it fun, the main route she did was London → New York (I’ll let you guess why “short haul”).
I remember her saying the company (BA) changed with time and it was less nice. Now I think she’s with FlyBe (as FO) and loves it.
