Socata TB21 GT versus Cessna TR182

This assumes you take off with full fuel. With 60 gallons the TB20 (and I guess 21 also) is still good for 3 hours plus sensible reserves. And would you really want to fly for more than 3 hours with 4 adults in the plane?

That’s not the point. In Europe, if you want to travel also a bit to the edges, you typically need to be able to do at least 800NM with the payload that you “normally” need, because many airports have no Avgas.

I am sure that loaded TB21 weighs around 9*50*kg, but I already wrote that before.

950 is about what I would expect for a TB21GT with the original avionics.

But changing the panel doesn’t change much. Removing the KG102A and even the vac pump saves a few kg, but that’s about it.

One can use a plane like this for short runs and I have known plenty of TB20/21 owners who do just that, but then – outside of the Swiss scenario – the 21 doesn’t make sense. Better to buy the 20.

I am very sure no TB20 or 21 GT was ever below 900kg, by the time Socata installed some avionics.

I used to know an FI (dead now) who used to deliver TBs from Tarbes to Air Touring in the UK and they did not even have gyro instruments on leaving the factory. This may be where 844kg comes from – around 1984.

You can be certain that BEM figures provided by a manufacturer or salesperson is with no options and the absolute minimum of equipment that makes the aircraft legal to fly VFR by day.

So, if actual people weights are as depicted above 110+70x3+40=360kg might make it, restricting non-useful weight (tools, covers, flight bag not carrying useless old charts …). If not, then 400kg leaves a lot of margin for those “extras” but is marginal for the TB20/21.

With 844 kg (which I am sure is way too low) this plane would end up with a full fuel payload of 314 kg, so well short of even that. Ok, 46 kg fuel means roughly 58 Liters you need to leave behind to be at MTOW, which is not that much in terms of range, but still a dent.

Now if the BEW is actually closer to 900, let alone 950 kg as the estimates go above….. that means full fuel payload might end up in the 214 kg range. And that is a 2 seater really. But that is speculation, without the real weight sheet we will never know.

The TB20GT is 900 and the TB21GT will be about 950kg.

Thx a lot everybody… Overhaul was made in very good shop, maybe best… With 950 kg BEW – it is problem… waiting for actual BEW and I wanna get rid of suction system and gyro and install G5 – it will reduce BEW 5-10kg, three systems for fuel management :) etc… I am not willing spend in plane more then 3 hours per leg… Longer trips I will plan with technical landing… But practically you need fuel for 4 hours – 3 hours trip… cca 900 kg BEW is ok for me… I must reduce my weight :)… 80% trips will be with my wife only… but sometimes we will be 3 or 4…

To keep the KFC225 autopilot you’d need to install a GI275 as it won’t work with a G5. Of course if you want to fit the GFC500 then you don’t need to worry, and that is a nice upgrade anyway with further weight savings from the much smaller servos

You will save maybe 3kg when removing the vac pump, it doesn’t actually weigh that much. I’d love to see the actual empty weight though, I suspect some of these GT model TBs are closer to 1000kg empty.

BEW of this aircraft – 951kg :) …. Only for info – TB 21GT with MT prop and glass – 911kg :) so my family loading is for max 2h flight with reserve, 3 people – 3h flight with reserve:

30 kg baggage is really nothing. Maybe okay for lunch trip but not much more…

Well, I can barely fit a single set of spare pants and a credit card – if you’re forced to be frugal, you become frugal.
