Robin avionics upgrade thread (lack of STCs etc)

in what way the GFC500 hardware and software for experimentals is different from the GFC500 for the certified world?

Probably none. But the catch is that the A/P control parameters have to be determined individually for each aircraft type. For a homebuilt or experimental you are the aircraft designer so you are trusted with flight testing to determine the parameters. For certified aircraft you are not but Garmin has already done that for every type they have an STC for.

This is in no way unique for the GFC500. E.g. the venerable BendixKing digital A/Ps have is a configuration module hooked up to the autopilot computer where these parameters are stored.

Which is why I really like the alternate digital A/Ps, derived from the experimental ones, where you can adjust the parameters yourself – like Trio und former TruTrak … It was a PITA when we had one A/P fitted with a GFC500 and it had to be sent back&forth for every iteration of parameters until it was kind of ok.
