Flying GA through Africa - what countries?

It is six years now since I did a trip in my bonanza down the western side of Africa to Cape Town returning up the eastern side. I am told that the western route down is not now recommended partly because of getting avgas difficulties (won’t affect you) but also because of political difficulties in some of the French speaking countries – Mali, Niger and Burkino Faso for example. However the eastern route – Egypt, Sudan, Kenya and southward should still be straightforward.

I think Mike Grey of White Rose remains the doyen for obtaining overflight and landing permits. I have also used GASE and there are advantages to using them on the eastern route where they have useful contacts who could ease your way through the bureaucracy in a number of stop over airports. PM if you want any further details.
