Spontaneous trip to Ireland, England and Scotland, looking for some recommendations

Hi alltogether,
since it will work out to take our dog to UK by Blacklane starting from Calais to Biggin Hill on sunday I’m looking for some advices where to go to.
First: Has anybody done customs on a sunday at calais?
Where would you go, if you would have nearly two weeks of holidays for flying around? On my list are the Scilly Islands, Glenforsa and Dublin. We are looking for nice places and btw. I like islands to fly.
Thanks, Peter

You know you can’t bring a dog into the UK by GA??

Really, how is bringing a dig by GA different to on scheduled? Same for France?

No idea on France but UK is not possible.

Sorry Jason for the misunderstanding. We will go today to calais, my wife will use the a driver setvice to pass the tunnel in a car together with pur dog and then we will meet up again in Biggin Hill. After entering the UK with the dog itis not any longer a problem to take the dog with youin GA plane.

I am sure the business jet community (where money is sometimes not an issue at all) has a way of doing it. Some of the passengers, especially the lady passengers, have very posh dogs… I recall reading that at Biggin there is a facility for processing them, but I don’t know if this info is current.

Oh yes, the Calais dog drop is apparently very common. Plenty of jets do the same.

Just be careful of problems with Eurotunnel though: BBC

Hi Peter,

Back to your original question.

Regarding Ireland, you’ve said that you’d like to visit Dublin and you’ve mentioned that you like islands.
For Dublin, your best (really only practical option) is Weston (EIWT). There is a bus that guys by the airport (maybe a 10 minutes walk from the terminal). It’s route number 67 and the timetable can be found here Dublin Bus
You’re interested in stop 3945. Cost about €3.30 (they don’t give any change, so best to have exact fare if you can!)

A taxi to the city will cost in the order of €35-40.

The only islands which you can visit in Ireland are the Arran Islands on the west coast. EIIM (Inishmore) being the biggest of them. They are worth a visit. The runway is 500m tarmac, but has some lose chippings. (Like a new road. Good surface, but tiny stones left over). So either do your power checks on the grass or keep them to low power, or you’ll have tiny chips in your prop.

Anywhere along the west cost of Ireland will give you fantastic scenery from the air (and also from the ground). Galway (Galway airport reopened now) & Killarney (Kerry airport is nearest-expect €50 each way in a taxi) are nice cities.
Have a look here for some ideas and the scenery in various locations along the west coast of Ireland.

The area around Glenforsa is gorgeous. You can also visit Coll & Colonsay islands (about 500mtr tarmac on each). Once on the ground, it’s hard to get around without your own transport, so don’t expect to go too far from the airports. But those islands aren’t that big. There isn’t a lot to do on the ground other than enjoy the tranquillity and remoteness. You’ll need an out of hours permit to visit Coll & Colonsay, but it can be obtained from Oban by sending them a scan of your insurance cert. It’s free for the islands only (you need to pay if you want out of hours permits for Oban or other mainly airports).

The isle of Skye is gorgeous. To see from the ground you really need your own transport, but from the air it’s just as spectacular. For an overnight stay, Plockton is walkable from the airport.

The only place to get avgas in that are is Oban.(Further north you can get some (or at least used to be able to) in Stornoway).

See here for my favourite routings around the west coast of Scotland, and the scenery that you can anticipate.

You’ll need good weather though

I hope that helps a bit!
