Sony Eink reader cockpit use..?

Interesting development to avoid glare issues on tablets e.g to see approach plates, checklists etc..

The new Sony version will cost about 800 euro..

This looks like a bit more R&D is needed…

These devices certainly offer very good sunlight readability, but…

A while ago I spent a lot of time messing with various “e-ink” products / e-book readers. None of them were any good for cockpit use. At a real stretch, just about, marginally, they might be usable for Jeppesen terminal charts, if somebody produced a specialised user interface which enabled a rapid selection, comparable with say JeppTC on the Ipad, or Goodreader on the Ipad for a rapid selection of pages within a PDF. The problem is that the e-book display cannot be scrolled, is slow to rewrite, and while small areas can be re-written more quickly (e.g. the create a flashing cursor) I don’t know if this capability has ever been used to create a half decent user interface for document selection. I spent some time “trying to talk” to the arrogant developers of the Irex Ilyad about these applications, without success. Their view is that it runs Linux so what more do you want? Another guy I know spent a lot of time working on an app which could display the US aviation charts on the Ilyad, correctly zoomed etc, and in the end gave up.

At home we have a thing called Pocketbook which is another piece of junk. Far too slow and another crap user interface.

These things are fine for linear reading of a document e.g. a book, a user manual, but as soon as you want any kind of random access you will tear your hair out, due to the response time.

At €800 the Sony product will need to be absolutely stunning, and as fast as a normal tablet.

My feeling is that the market demands functional integration. That’s why smartphones have killed the PDA market – a lot of people can live their, yeah… entire life on a smartphone. Sony have just dropped out of the laptop market… not enough functional integration = poor sales.

Well I don’t think so..the product is out…looks promising there used to be a US company already providing some specialized service for these kind of readers in the past..

Interesting…

If you look closely at the display, it is not much faster than existing e-book readers. What they have is a good finger-touch screen and that could facilitate a better user interface for a rapid page selection.

It’s of course to early to judge but the demo’s I saw on you tube showed some interesting features and relatively fast. In addition I am getting at the age where far sight glasses are almost needed.
Also if you use the AIP approach charts in the cockpit an A4 E-ink reader could be a good solution as you can write some important stuff on the approach plate more bigger
