Skew T

Weatheronline skew T's only seem to be displaying for the UK, Europe does not seem to work( sure it used to) any one know of another source for Europe Thanks Rob

I'm afraid I'm unable to help, but out of curiosity: what's a skew T?

AeroPlus app (paid for version, although I think you can trial it with the free version) has a nifty sort of Skew T called Cloud'.

Skew T is a tephigram of temp/dew point that you can work out cloud bottom/tops.

I have some notes on tephigrams (of which a similar form is called a skew-t) here.

They can contain a lot of information from which a clever meteorologist (not me) can work out all sorts of stuff to do with atmospheric stability.

As to where they come from, nowadays all weather forecasting is done with computer models which contain a 3D model of the atmosphere, and such models can churn out a skew-t for any spot on the earth.

The UK Met Office does not give access to its 3D model (they sell it for quite a lot of £££) so most free weather websites use the US-run GFS model, which is accessible via many websites e.g. here where they are called Soundings.

Forecast skew-ts can be notoriously unreliable - like any forecast - if done for a piece of the atmosphere which is inherently hard to forecast. But AFAIK it is from the skew-t that forecasts like PROB30 TEMPO TSRA come from, according to certain rules. The skew-t gives the illusion of great accuracy, because you can read off temperatures, cloud base, cloud tops, etc, directly.

You can get real (weather baloon) skew-ts from the Univ of Wyoming website - see my 1st link. Even though these are done just at 0000Z and 1200Z they can be very useful, in the right situations.

If you're interested in SkewTs etc - I can thoroughly recommend the weather school courses run by Simon Keeling - they're brilliant and geared towards pilots.

University of Wyoming, Upper Air has the best interface. Quite complete and world wide.

Choose Europe, SKEW-T and the station.

Good bit, they also have Metar and other stuff, it is one site which is hotlinked on my Explorer.

The Wyoming Skew-T Log-P diagrams only come twice a day. Websites and apps often base their Skew-T diagram information on the GFS model (or combined with other models) and then can give a forecast or any time of the day and also days ahead. The further ahead, the less accurate the prediction becomes. Predictions for the next day are often useful and give you a good indication of expected cloud layers, top of clouds, freezing level as well as the convective energy in the clouds (lifted index, CAPE) which give you an indication of CB and TS activity to be expected or predicted. Combine this with the Infrared Cloudtop Temp Sat images and other information to get a good picture.

I am looking for a Skew T App for IOS. I’ve tried https://meteo-parapente.com which I found a bit slow and jumpy probably because of 3G/4G used for testing, and looked at http://www.skewtlogpro.com/ but not bought it, I notice the last update was a year ago, I sent them a question over a month ago and received no reply. The best technical source is https://rucsoundings.noaa.gov/ but is unfriendly to use and via a browser only.

I like the Skew T because (I think) it explains a bit more of what’s going on, i.e. where a Gramet shows no cloud, presumably because it falls just in the numeric spread of their algorithms, the Skew T shows me that it is very near to developing cloud. Ideally an App that you can enter a route and get a series of Skew Ts like SkewTLogPro does, but only for USA would be ideal.

Aeroplus Weather maybe?

AeroPlus Weather does include a Skew-T Log(p) diagram indeed. I am searching for more mobile apps that support it. Does anyone know any good app that supports the Skew-T diagram? The only one I can find it Meteo-Parapente, the SkewTLogPro app, which seems to be not available outside the US and an app called Soundings Mobile, which also only works in the US.
