Meltdown ! (magneto failure)

Here we have a total magneto failure :

So Grasshopper, can you tell us what may have caused this ?

Can you discern a reason? When was it last overhauled? Is it a Bendix or Slick? Looks like a Bendix but not sure.

It’s a Slick and it has @ 1100H TIS, but the probable cause has little to do with the TIS.

What we have here is a breaker points failure that caused the nylon gear to melt .

Breaker points fail when the capacitor fails.

This is perfectly described in the “The Magneto Ignition System” published by Sacramento Sky Ranch :
