Avidyne IFD user waypoint limitation

I have just heard from an IFD owner that while user waypoints can be defined, they cannot be used for an airfield from which you want to depart. You can arrive at a user waypoint but it won’t accept one for the start of a route.

Is this still current?

Yes, it is. The first waypoint in an IFD is a special waypoint called “Origin”. This needs to be an official airfield in the database. For VFR it’s not a big deal, but is a bit of a pain if one is departing VFR to join the SID of an IFR airfield since a SID is only selectable on the Origin waypoint.

There are workarounds, depending upon the situation (VFR or IFR).

For VFR, the easiest is to code any existing airfield as the Origin and the user airfield as the next waypoint. Then activate the 2nd leg just before takeoff.

For IFR joining, one needs to code the IFR airfield as Origin including the SID and add the VFR and IFR airfields at the end of the FPL, then activate that last leg just before takeoff. When ready to join the SID, activate the SID leg on the Origin airfield waypoint. A bit of a cludge but it works ok.

True, hopefully Avidyne will rectify it soon.
