I had friends who sold up to live the life. They were Bristol based, the useful shit commute to London, the packed life. No kids, except she had an older daughter from a previous. They bought the farm, and turned it into a Chambre D’Hote. We went down twice a year in the Bonanza. Beach in summer, skiing in Monts d’Olmes in the winter.
We loved it.
She got homesick and started spending more time back in Bristol. leaving him. So great idea, buy next door and move her parents down. Mortgaged to the hilt. not accepted particularly well in the community, starting a holiday business from scratch. Lost the lot. Because guess what.Parents and wife all decided to go back to UK. He was a lovely guy, part time musician. I really felt for him. But lesson learned. Grass, greener, property abroad. What could possibly go wrong?

Yes, what could possibly go wrong with cashing in appreciating assets, buying non-appreciating assets and moving to a low income area?

The way to do that is to wait until you’re holding enough appreciating and income producing assets that cashing in some of them to live in a lower cost area won’t make any difference to future choices. The step before that is to move to a high income area, one where you can accumulate the appreciating assets in the first place, and preferably one where you can enjoy your life in the meantime. There’s no free lunch.

Perversely, moving to a low economic potential, low cost area is best for people who have until then been the most diligent about accumulating transportable income and assets. Otherwise you become dependent on the infrastructure and economy around you and can’t leave, which may not work out well for an outsider. It also helps if you’re not culturally insular, don’t attempt to surround yourself with others just like you (most of whom will be culturally insular), and don’t try to continue your last life in a new place.

Exactly. That is what happens a lot, usually within the first few years.

It is good form in France to be able to say bonjour, merci, s’il vous plait with a smile.

Absolutely !!

What exactly are you talking about, and in which circumstance?

I assume he is talking about the marxist slogan (although Marx wasn’t the first one to use that phrase). But I also would be interested to know in what circumstances it has been tried. Certainly not in the Soviet bloc. Possibly in parts of Spain during the civil war.

Ah yes. The time-honoured defence of communism, or fairly hard-left socialism, is that although it’s been tried many times it’s never been tried properly. So what you need is an autocratic state to ensure it is implemented properly, which leads to…

Actually, outside politics it has been tried and works extremely well. It can be seen in the way communities.around world come together whenever there is a catastrophe.
Look at the way people who have food have been delivering it to their neighbours who are isolating with Covid 19 or the vulnerable. And.they do it without a thought of profit.
Or those who give their time share their food and often their houses when it floods have inundated villages and towns. These people are not all communists or socialists in the.derogatory sense of the way many use those titles.

Words, words, words. What exactly was this referred to, and under which circumstance?

I got associations to the military. But I guess this it not what this is referred to. I cannot think of any other place it has deliberately been implemented, sort of. And it works the way it works. It certainly get things done. Also more spontaneous during catastrophes and other community stuff, although personal engagement and initiative plays a large part.

I have to wonder what exactly is meant. Is it a believe that without some “proper” incentive, no private initiative exists?

Amusingly Chairman Mao decided to bring the cultural revolution to an end, and purge the gang of four, when the Shanghai cadres at the leading edge of the cultural revolution (see how I kept the aeronautical theme :)), declared the end of history and the abolition of the state.
