Russian invasion of Ukraine

We have some special rules for this thread, in addition to the normal EuroGA Guidelines. The basic one is that EuroGA will not be a platform for pro Russian material. For that, there are many sites on the internet. No anti Western posts. Most of us live in the "West" and enjoy the democratic and material benefits. Non-complying posts will be deleted and, if the poster is a new arrival, he will be banned.

There is a national federation of fish friers? Well, why not I guess…

Of course, every trade in the world has a “trade body” which charges for membership and for the money they send you a certificate which you can hang on the wall. The body has a full time chief exec who spends his day lobbying to make membership mandatory for anyone who wants to exercise the said privileges.

That is how the world goes round. It’s quite like aviation really

Actually a reduction in consumption of “fish” (often you can barely taste the fish) and chips will probably be exactly balanced out by the reduction in the NHS budget

I know you can get true north with a “gyro” but it has to be a very high quality one. And FOG gyros are still outperformed by large mechanical ones (we had a thread on that recently). Do the modern systems actually do that? It would be a good solution because a compass gives you magnetic heading and then you need charts for the variation, etc.

I received training on such a system 35 years ago. It was roughly a 25 kg unit powered by 36 V 400 Hz and taking about 15 minutes to get a bearing with an accuracy of 1 angular minute (a somewhat newer unit from the same family would have it down to 20"). A self-propelled howitzer or an artillery radar would have such a unit mounted onboard.

Russian state television has said Moscow may deploy tactical nuclear weapons to its European borders if Finland and Sweden allow military bases on their territory after joining NATO.
They must think everybody is absolutely stupid. Russia has always had nukes stored everywhere.

Not quite. Tactical nuclear weapons are not stored with the launchers. They are kept at maintenance bases and are only hauled out shortly before the planned use. In fact, one of the reasons the West keeps cool about the Russian nukes is that these trips are relatively easy to track.

The Leonardo document refers to a ring laser gyro. Perhaps it has some other advantage over mechanical ones.

It is much smaller. Still, it takes a long time to establish true N because it has to detect the earth’s rotation axis which obviously one can’t do “instantly”.

Interesting that since the Russians must have had this for ages too, because they can’t shoot straight. Their artillery hits are mostly random, which is why they so much enjoy doing apartment blocks. Although Ukraine did say, when they blew up a big Russian self-propelled gun that it was “causing a lot of trouble” so maybe that had it.

Tactical nukes are stored in bunkers but still Russia is believed to have these more or less everywhere. It is quite interesting that there has not been an accident yet, but clearly despite it being a completely corrupt country from top to bottom, they must have a system for making sure these don’t get nicked…

May be there has been, but we just didn’t get to hear about.

I think you would hear about an actual fission device going off

That one is really nailing it down

Mandatory membership of an organisation is illegal. I think also in the UK. This is part of the basic human rights.

I can see this is heading here at mach3.

Just seen this:

EU reconstruction plan

The war in Ukraine rages on, but the EU is already making plans for reconstruction. More precisely, she discusses how the repair of war damage can be financed after a peace agreement. To this end, the EU Commission wants to set up a so-called strategic reconstruction plan called “Rebuild Ukraine”. The eight-page draft is available to the Süddeutsche Zeitung . The plan is intended to allocate money from member states and international partners to projects in Ukraine, the funds are said to be linked to strict conditions, such as fighting corruption and reform efforts by the Ukrainian government. Such reforms should bring the country closer to the EU – after all, Ukraine wants to become a member.

And this was to be expected, that Russia will grab those injured who were extracted from the bunker, stick some trumped-up charges on them, and use this to stop Ukraine from going after the war crimes perpetrators which Ukraine is trying to catch…

Investigators of the Russian Investigative Committee, as part of the investigation of criminal cases on the crimes of the Ukrainian regime against the civilian population of Donbass, will interrogate the surrendered militants who were hiding at the Azovstal plant in Mariupol .
Russian investigators will identify the nationalists, check them for involvement in crimes committed against the civilian population, and the information obtained during interrogations will be compared with other data available in the materials of criminal cases.
