Russian invasion of Ukraine

We have some special rules for this thread, in addition to the normal EuroGA Guidelines. The basic one is that EuroGA will not be a platform for pro Russian material. For that, there are many sites on the internet. No anti Western posts. Most of us live in the "West" and enjoy the democratic and material benefits. Non-complying posts will be deleted and, if the poster is a new arrival, he will be banned.

Yes, also in Germany, but not only.

What staggers me is the vast number of anti tank weapons the Russians had. They had them coming out of their ears. But there isn’t much evidence of them having got much use. The Ukrainians claim to be steadily increasing their armoured vehicle stocks, from what they captured, and that was true even before the current events. Now they are collecting loads.

Perhaps some day we will know what has actually been going on, but from what I have heard/read is that most of the Ukrainian heavy-ish defense was smashed up early in the war. Today, do Ukraine have anything at all that is not acquired from the west, or captured from Russia? A few planes perhaps?

It must be pretty demoralizing fro Russian soldiers being attacked by literally all kinds of western weapons and ammunition. They have no clue whatsoever what to expect around the next corner, or how to defend themselves against it. Ukraine is a dump for stored western weapons and ammo, as well as a sand box for trying new stuff in a real war situation.

They had loads left. They lost a lot early on but they stashed away ~ 50 jets. Later they got more ex-USSR planes from the former USSR satellites.

Nearly all their heavy armour (MBTs, APC, etc) is their original stock, plus a lot captured. Now, they are capturing really big numbers. Very little armour came from the West; only a few bits of old junk.

ATGMs came mostly from the West but the Russian Stugna-P is probably as effective as the others, largely due to the long range (5km), laser guided so ok against moving vehicles, and the launcher can be 50m away from the designator, so he is safe from return fire. It also produces great videos

I think the Ukrainian drones are very demoralising. Literally, some soldiers can be walking in the woods and they drop something on them, anywhere, day or night. Lots of movies… But the Russians have them too.

The really big change has been HIMARS, and more recently anti radar missiles which destroyed Russian air defences over large areas.

HIMARS, Mars, PZH2000 and recently the Gepards, also the French stuff. And now also captured equipment. Bad morale, corruption, bad / no training and outdated command structures in the Russian mil contribute a lot. As long as they don’t declare a general mobilization, troops are basically free to walk. Which they do and succeed in, unless there are Wagner PMCs in the rear echelon shooting them. So, all in all, a big mess.

Interesting. Very little has been said about the Gepard. In fact just about nothing at all. It looks like it probably works, looking at the spec. It had never seen action so very little has been known about it.

Reading the wiki it is really old; even with upgrades the last probably 30-40 years ago, and all those made, domestic or exported, have been withdrawn from service. So basically it was just “old iron”. But perhaps it is effective against something.

This engine is from one of the Iranian drones. Apparently not a Rotax but similar

Not very similar to any Rotax I have seen. This is a 4 cylinder 2 stroke by the looks of it.
