Inspired to find a Josephine O’Donnell won the 1981 King’s Cup, in a Piper Super Cub L18C ex Netherlands Air Force, G-NICK, since converted via STC to a PA-18-160 to G-ZPPY.

Am sure this requires good flying skills and understanding handicapping rules and very different to Reno.

Having watched the last-1 Skies Above Britain programme and the coverage of air racing (which incidentally IMHO did GA absolutely no favours, portraying it as a hobby for “third tier royalty” and assorted mad people with more money than brains) what stops somebody entering a Lancair IV and just winning every race? I read the rules in the above link and on a quick read they just say 250kt max.

Peter I suspect the light entertainment editor ensured the programme came across chanelling Those magnificent men in their flying machines, for entertainment purposes. I thought the characters were good sports allowing themselves to be presented in that way.

The aircraft are handicapped, a colleague is a regular winner in a Yankee A-1, and likely to continue to be a winner, despite soon breaking into his ninth decade. In the fifties they raced old warbirds and recently retired jets.

The Alderney air race is one of the more pleasant and enjoyable events in the GA calendar, so I am told. The island is unique in being part of the Channel Islands without being a financial centre.
