I think they found a new flying technique: using vertical speed on the autopilot the values are -2000fpm for approach and +2500fpm for go-around, the glitch is unless the aircraft is flying at 400kts-500kts these don’t play well with 5% gradients…
This is well worth a read as a lesson for all instrument pilots. Nobody is immune to a massive screw-up like this.
In the West you generally have a radar controller watching you and giving you specific instructions on descents and headings until you intercept the LOC. If this is not happening, due to lack of ATC doing it or due to lack of ATC ELP, a big hole in the cheese opens up especially with respect to obstacle clearance. There have been many similar stories from Spain in years past.
The EGPWS probably saved them. Airliners have crashed in similar circumstances in the past.
