Used Cirrus price development

I never knew there was a retractable SR22

I find it unbelievable that people will pay ~$1m for a 4-5 seat SEP, or $650k for a new C182. I looked at a new SR22 in 2003, and the price was ~320k. That’s 300% inflation over 20 years! By comparison, a 2003 VW Golf cost about 16k new, and the 2022 is around 23k (US pricing), or 45% inflation. The 2003 Cirrus had a full glass panel, and the only material differences in avionics compared with today’s model are WAAS and synthetic vision. It’s the same airframe, and in theory the modern, mostly standard Garmin glass should have made everything cheaper. And of course it’s not just Cirrus; all the manufacturers have inflated prices to stratospheric levels. I really don’t understand it.

Bizarrely, the WAAS upgrade of 2003 full glass panels (Diamonds, Cirrus, Mooneys, Skylanes) costs as much as the airframe without engine in TBM, it costs as much as a full blown SEP, in A320, you are looking for +5 milllion per single serial number !

Modular panel with mix of steam and glass is the only way to go ’ future bullet proof and tout ca’…

Well I guess, since they keep having record sales, that the market research concluded they could.

Yep, I keep telling Cirrus afficionados they are crazy.

For the same price as a new SR22 they could be flying a great condition PA46 Jetprop, doing 260 kts, climbing at 2,500 fpm, with cabin class comfort, pressurisation, weather radar etc. No comparison whatsoever. And for 60% of the price they could be flying a PA46 Mirage (piston).

And BTW, the Jetprop is easier to fly than the Cirrus.

Normally I’m not so much of a fan of the Cirrus look but seeing that photo I thought Dang, that plane looks really good. Now I understand why.

And yet the owners aren’t carrying home suitcases full of cash. Instead they had to sell to investors who don’t expect short-term a ROI. What does that tell us?

Of course but those Pipers are not expensive, they are not top tech, they are not trendy and they lack the safety from the chute and besides the paintings of Pipers is just awful anyway (saying this as top Cirrus/iPhone fan but I will never buy one )

This is what I think as well. I get the feeling most people buying these just don’t care about the cost, because it’s an insignificant sum for them—which is the reason they can sell them for such crazy prices.
