Scone/Perth and advantages of a Z flight plan

1 Post

Spent three days in Aberdeen and used EGPT Perth as the airport. Aberdeen did welcome GA perhaps 15-20 years ago, but is now prohibitively expensive. Dundee has IFR approaches but no AvGas. The local farm strips are welcoming, but are still waterlogged this time of the year.

Perth is a pleasant town with good railway links, basically a bit over an hour to either Edinburgh or Aberdeen.

We flew airways but with a solid VFR TAF at destination. Perth is busy on a VFR day with a flying club, and a CPL/ME/IR school. There is an unofficial approach, but if I needed to let down the easiest is to use Dundee and transit VFR the ten miles to Perth. There is high ground, so only suitable for cloud break to MSA.

The return today was through a warm occlusion that had sat over Scotland for the last few days. Not having de icing/anti icing, this meant an IFR departure but staying below icing, and joining airways down route south when the weather system had been cleared. This worked out fine with excellent ATC from Scottish and Edinburgh, who helped coordinate the subsequent airways join. The join was FL090 at Pole Hill and this put us on top. Tops were higher in the occlusion.

Would recommend using Perth as a base for visiting Scotland, very helpful airport staff. Have posted prices on the database.
